Jul 23, 2023How to Decorate an Outdoor Space

An outdoor space like a terrace or patio should be as comfortable as any indoor room. But it’s outdoors – you don’t want it to feel too perfect.
Here’s how designers Christine and John Gachot furnished their Manhattan terrace →
Start by tending any plants in containers. Be sure to prune, deadhead and water them so they look their best before you invite friends over.
Then bring in a floor covering. An outdoor rug will help define your space (and keep your feet from getting scorched).
Now, the furniture! Don’t be afraid to accessorize with pillows and throws, as you would if you were indoors. “You always want super-comfortable seating,” Christine Gachot said. And maybe add some floor cushions.
Set the mood with light and sound: Portable lanterns and speakers come in handy here.
Don’t forget the drinks. You’ll need a bar, but it doesn’t have to be fancy. The Gachots use a simple rolling cart and a Coleman cooler filled with ice.
And games: It’s nice to have a few board games on hand – as well as a pair of binoculars. From a terrace, John Gachot said, “you just see some of the most interesting things.”
